John 8:44 has Jesus speaking to those who don't understand him: "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." One of Satan's most persistent lying voice is that of discouragement. We think we want to improve and come closer to God, but a little inner voice tells us we can never do that. God would never want us because we have sinned so much and we are so ashamed. Why would God come to such an imperfect creature? This is not the voice of God but the voice of the devil who tries to keep us from God. Jesus said that he came to save sinners, so if we admit that we are sinner, we qualify for salvation, don't we? Reject that lying voice that tells you God does not care or would not care because he cares immensely. He gave his blood for your sins. When you feel discouraged, cry out, "Jesus, save me! Mary (his mother), help me!" Conversion begins with desiring it. God will grant this desire. Be patient while it happens.
