Let the Dead Bury the Dead

In the Gospels we read of the incident of a man asking to follow Jesus and telling him that he'd do so after he buried his father. Jesus said, "Let the dead bury the dead, but you go and proclaim the Kingdom of God." When we follow Christ, we must leave behind the spiritually dead and go to tell others the Good News. Our relationships with friends and family may change and new relationships with new people develop. Jesus and the world are opposites--we can't follow both at the same time. Saying yes to Jesus means saying no to the world and to those who embrace it. We say no to them, not by shunning them, but by living our faith and gently and persistently evangelizing worldly minded people so that they may come eventually to know Jesus.
