Learning to Choose the Less

Our society pushes us to choose the more, the bigger, the better. St. Francis followed Jesus who chose the less, the smaller, the unwanted and rejected. As people grow in their ability and knowledge, they generally advance in work and obtain greater pay and prestige. But as we grow in our ability to follow Christ and in the knowledge of what that means, we should desire to be more unknown and to receive less recognition. Following Christ in the footsteps of St. Francis means converting ourselves to choose the lower place, as Christ chose to descend from heaven to earth. We seek to be lesser, not greater.
