Jesus said, " When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world." (John 16:21) He was referring to the pain the disciples would feel upon his crucifixion and death, and the joy that they would experience upon his resurrection. Jesus' statement could refer also to conversion. Conversion from following our own way to following Christ is difficult. When we get to the point of knowing that God wants us to give up our old habits and friends and find new ones that bring us closer to him, there is a great deal of pain and anguish because we don't know what God is going to ask of us. We know what we are leaving behind; we don't know what we will be finding ahead of us. We need to trust him with our life. Only when we surrender to the change that conversion requires, will we find the joy and the peace. Only then will we forget the anguish that we went through in order to give up ourselves to embrace Him.
